HELENA, MONTANA 59620 ur History ur Program The Keep Montana Green Program (KMG) began in 1945 as an expansion of an original program started in Washington State in 1940. The goal was to conduct a coordinated effort to prevent forest fires wherever they might occur nationwide. The Keep Greens that were ultimately successful were the ones that received support from local forest products industry and effective leadership. In 1954, the State Forester's Office provided that leadership. Gareth Moon, the new State Forester assigned the responsibility of KMG to his Fire Prevention officer. On April 17, 1961, the Keep Montana Green Association became a chartered non-profit organization. In that same year, the first KMG Fire Prevention Poster Contest was conducted and 1995 will be the 34th year of the contest. KMG celebrates 50 years of fire prevention this year! Montana has changed over the last 50 years and so has wildfire prevention. Houses among the trees have provided a new challenge for KMG. KMG must be more aggressive and proactive in educating the public about wildfire and prevention over the next 50 years. KMG protects our natural resources and helps maintain the quality of life in Montana by doing the following: • Teaching children through its annual Wildfire Prevention Poster Contest. Over 40,000 entries have been received since 1961. • Posting fire prevention highways and road signs. KMG delivers the fire prevention message in rest areas and on roads throughout the State. • Working with the media in delivering our fire prevention message. Both in person and through public service announcements in the summer. • Recognizing people's contributions in fire prevention. Each year KMG presents awards for fire prevention accomplishments. • Making distribution of fire prevention materials to schools, homeowners, and others to inform them of fire prevention problems and solutions.
